Blue recycling carts are provided free to Norfolk residents. Households can request up to two recycling carts at no charge. Collection occurs every other week on your designated trash day. Place blue cart curbside between 5:00 PM the day before collection and 7:00 AM on collection day. Allow at least 6 feet of space between cart and obstacles like vehicles, mailboxes, and utility poles. Cart lids must close securely. Do NOT place recyclables in plastic bags - place items loose directly in your blue cart. Recyclables must be clean, dry, and empty. Flatten cardboard boxes. Remove lids from glass jars and bottles. Remove cart from curbside by end of collection day. To request a recycling cart, visit mynorfolk.org or call Norfolk Cares at (757) 664-6510. View your collection schedule at www.norfolk.gov/396/Collection-Schedule-Search or check the 2025 Curbside Recycling Calendar. All service issues must be reported within 24 hours following collection day. Use the Waste Wizard tool at www.norfolk.gov/wastewizard to check if specific items are recyclable.

Holiday Schedule

Norfolk observes the following holidays with collection schedule changes: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day (July 4th), Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. When a holiday falls on a regular collection day, collection may be delayed by one day. Residents should check the city's official 2025 Holiday Collection Schedule for specific dates and any collection day adjustments. Holiday schedule information is available at www.norfolk.gov/403/Holiday-Collection or by calling Norfolk Cares at (757) 664-6510. The SPSA Norfolk Transfer Station has different holiday hours - it is typically closed on major holidays but may have modified weekend hours. Always verify holiday schedules before placing items at curb or visiting facilities.
