Zone A bulk collection occurs on the 1st Wednesday of each month. Zone B bulk collection occurs on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. White goods (large appliances like refrigerators, washers, dryers, stoves, air conditioners) require a special appointment - call (973) 733-3644 or (973) 733-4311 to schedule. Items exceeding the 10-item limit must be removed by a private hauler at the property owner's expense. Place items at the curb between 7:00 PM and 10:00 PM the evening before collection day.
Recycling Program
Accepted Materials
- •Paper: Newspapers and inserts, magazines and catalogs, office paper, junk mail and envelopes, phone books, paper bags, paperback books, greeting cards
- •Cardboard: Corrugated cardboard (flattened and tied in bundles up to 3 feet in length, maximum 50 lbs per bundle), shipping boxes, cereal and dry food boxes
- •Plastics: #1 PETE containers (water bottles, soda bottles, beverage containers), #2 HDPE containers (milk jugs, juice jugs, detergent bottles, shampoo bottles)
- •Metals: Aluminum cans (beverage cans), bi-metal cans (food cans), steel cans, tin cans
- •Glass: Glass bottles and jars (all colors - clear, green, brown)
- •Mixed Materials: Lead-acid batteries, consumer cell batteries, automobile tires (at designated drop-off locations), used motor oil (at designated locations), white goods/appliances (by appointment), ferrous and other scrap metals

Newark uses a dual-stream recycling system with two separate collection days per week. Zone A: Paper and cardboard collected on Mondays (place out between 10:00 PM Sunday and 6:00 AM Monday); Glass, plastic, and metal containers collected on Thursdays (place out between 10:00 PM Wednesday and 6:00 AM Thursday). Zone B: Paper and cardboard collected on Tuesdays (place out between 10:00 PM Monday and 6:00 AM Tuesday); Glass, plastic, and metal containers collected on Fridays (place out between 10:00 PM Thursday and 6:00 AM Friday). Do NOT use plastic grocery or shopping bags for recyclables. Cardboard must be flattened and tied together in bundles. Clean and dry all bottles, cans, and containers before recycling. Free recycling bins are available for Newark residents at 62 Frelinghuysen Avenue, Monday-Friday 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Valid photo ID and proof of residency required to obtain bins. Source separation of recyclables is mandated by City Ordinance Section 15:12-4.
Holiday Schedule
When a city-observed holiday falls during the week, trash and recycling collection may be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week. If a holiday falls on your regular collection day, check with DPW or look for posted notices. City-observed holidays include: New Year's Day (January 1), Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 20), Lincoln's Birthday (February 12), Washington's Birthday/Presidents' Day (February 17), Good Friday (April 18), Memorial Day (May 26), Independence Day (July 4), Labor Day (September 1), Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples' Day (October 13), Veterans Day (November 11), Thanksgiving Day (November 27), Day After Thanksgiving (November 28), and Christmas Day (December 25).
