Louisville uses single-stream recycling - all recyclables go together in one cart. The 95-gallon cart is the standard size provided by the city. You may use a store-bought container (30-40 gallon) as long as it has handles, has a lid, and is clearly labeled "RECYCLING." Leave recyclables loose in cart - do NOT use plastic bags. Items should be empty but do not need to be washed. Keep plastic lids attached to plastic containers. Flatten cardboard boxes to save space. Place cart at curb or alley by 6 AM on collection day, at least 3 feet from other carts and objects, with arrow pointing toward street. Check your Recycle Coach app or address lookup tool to confirm your recycling week.

Holiday Schedule

Waste collection does NOT occur in the Urban Services District on Metro Government holidays. When a holiday falls during the week, collection is delayed by ONE DAY for that day and all remaining collection days that week. For example, if Monday is a holiday, Monday collection moves to Tuesday, Tuesday moves to Wednesday, and so on. Observed holidays include: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. If a holiday falls on a weekend and Metro observes it on a Friday or Monday, collection delays will apply. Sign up for the Recycle Coach app to receive automatic alerts about holiday schedule changes. The Haz Bin and Waste Reduction Center are also closed on all Metro holidays.

Important Information

Louisville Metro Public Works provides comprehensive waste management services to over 150,000+ households in the Urban Services District (the former city limits of Louisville). Collection of garbage, yard waste, and recycling outside the Urban Services District varies by location - residents in small cities within Jefferson County should contact their city administrator, while residents of unincorporated areas must contract directly with a private waste collection company. COLLECTION SYSTEM: 1. GARBAGE (Roll-out cart) - Weekly collection Monday-Friday 2. RECYCLING (Blue cart, 95-gallon) - Bi-weekly collection (every other week) 3. YARD WASTE (Paper bags or approved containers) - Year-round with seasonal frequency changes IMPORTANT: Louisville uses address-based scheduling. To find your specific collection day, you MUST use one of these tools: - Recycle Coach App (available on iOS and Android) - highly recommended - Address Lookup Tool: https://louisvilleky.gov/government/public-works/services/garbage-collection - Call Metro311: (502) 574-5000 COLLECTION GUIDELINES: - Place cart at curb or alley no later than 6:00 AM on collection day - Can be set out no earlier than 4:00 PM the day before collection - Position cart at least 3 feet from other carts, buildings, or objects - Arrow on cart should point toward the street or alley - Remove carts from curb after collection LARGE ITEM PICKUP: The new Large Item Pickup by Appointment system allows residents to dispose of up to 4 household bulky items once per week. Schedule online or call (502) 574-5810. This program was implemented to help curb illegal dumping in Louisville. OUTSIDE URBAN SERVICES DISTRICT: If you live in a small city within Jefferson County (Shively, St. Matthews, Jeffersontown, Middletown, etc.), contact your city administrator for waste services. Unincorporated area residents must hire private haulers such as Rumpke, Waste Management, or ecotech, LLC.
