Keep cart lid fully closed. Flatten cardboard boxes to save space. No plastic bags accepted in recycling - many grocery stores accept plastic bags for recycling. Place cart at curb with wheels facing away from street by 6:00 AM on collection day. Remove cart from curb by end of collection day. Contaminated recycling (food, liquids, non-recyclables) may result in entire cart being rejected. When in doubt, throw it out. Call (305) 960-2800 for cart size exchanges or replacement.

Holiday Schedule

The City of Miami Department of Solid Waste maintains NORMAL collection schedules on most holidays including New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, and Thanksgiving Day. Collection schedules are adjusted ONLY for Christmas Day (December 25th) and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. When your normal scheduled collection day falls on Christmas Day or MLK Day, garbage collection will be performed on the next scheduled pickup day in your area (typically moved to Saturday or the following week). The City typically maintains regular service on Thanksgiving. Household Hazardous Waste facilities (operated by Miami-Dade County) are closed on major holidays. Always check the City website at miami.gov or call (305) 960-2800 for specific holiday week schedules.

Important Information

The City of Miami Department of Solid Waste provides residential curbside collection to approximately 100,000 households within city limits. Collection begins as early as 6:00 AM - place all carts and items at the curb by 6:00 AM on your scheduled collection day (items may be placed out after 5:00 PM the evening before). Remove carts from curb by the end of collection day. Carts should be placed at curbside within 5 feet of the street edge, with handles facing your home and wheels away from the street. Keep carts at least 3 feet apart and away from vehicles, mailboxes, poles, and other obstacles. Do NOT overfill carts - lids must close completely. Miami has separate waste collection from Miami-Dade County - verify you are a City of Miami resident by checking your address at miami.gov. Multi-family buildings (5+ units) and commercial properties must contract private haulers. Report missed collections within 24 hours by calling (305) 960-2800 or 311. Illegal dumping is prohibited - report violations to 311. During hurricane season (June-November), place carts in a secure location if severe weather is expected. For specific address lookup and personalized schedules, visit miami.gov or call (305) 960-2800.
